When first you sit in meditation, learning Chan contemplation—
Know that the secret lies within the Mysterious Pass.
Subtle and silent, regulate the breath;
Within the cauldron, yin and yang intertwine.

The nature must be awakened, the life-force transmitted;
Do not treat the firing process lightly.
Close your eyes, gaze within, guard your original essence;
Purity and stillness without striving are the root.

Within a hundred days, the signs appear:
A speck of light from the Water realm surges upward.
Yellow Lady acts as matchmaker,
Infant and Maiden unite as one.

Such boundless bliss—to whom can I tell it?
Energy surges through the body, rushing to the heavens.
Who truly knows this secret?
Like a mute having a dream—he cannot speak.

Quickly seize the moment, gather the Pre-Heaven;
A single dose of spiritual medicine pierces the Three Passes.
From the elixir field straight up to Muddy Pillar peak,
Then down the twelve-storied tower into the Central Plain.

Water and Fire in harmony—true Lead and Mercury;
Without Earth’s central energy, the elixir cannot form.
Let the mind die, let the life-force firm;
The light of spirit shines throughout the three thousand realms.

Under the leafless tree, the golden cock crows;
At midnight’s third watch, a red lotus appears.
The dragon roars, the tiger leaps with joy;
The immortal herbs hum together—this is no ordinary scene.

Dimly, vaguely—embracing being and non-being;
Within lies infinite creation and transformation.
Mystery within wonder, wonder within mystery;
The River Chariot ferries across the Three Passes.

Immortals are Buddhas, Buddhas are immortals;
One nature, perfectly luminous—not two separate ways.
Three teachings come from one family:
When hungry, eat; when tired, sleep.

False incense burning, misguided Chan seeking—
How can you know the Great Way is right before you?
Lost in confusion, vegetarian rites miss the point;
Once the human form is lost, for eons it’s hard to regain.

Deluded fools dream of the Western Paradise—
Like a blind man walking deep into the mountains at night.
Heaven’s secret is wondrous, not to be taken lightly;
To leak this heavenly secret would pile up mountains of sin.

Contemplate the Four Right Principles with focused mind;
Break through the mysterious barrier to mysteriously penetrate mystery.
At midday, midnight, dawn and dusk—cease not even at night;
Seek an enlightened master early to form the elixir.

Each day of practice, each day of steadfastness;
Do not judge the path by what your eyes now see.
After three years, then nine years—when the work is done,
You will refine one single pill of purple-gold elixir.

If you ask who composed this song—
It is the Pure Void Daoist, the Immortal Zhang Sanfeng.
